Based on my experience and careful review, Questrade’s fee structure is more favorable than many traditional brokers, particularly for stock and ETF trading, as they don’t charge commissions in those categories. For someone who often executes share and ETF trades, this $0 commission can make a real difference to net results over time, provided you remain vigilant about other potential costs. When evaluating Questrade’s forex offering, the primary cost comes from spreads, which the broker quotes from as low as 0.08 pips. In practice, I’ve found that spreads can fluctuate based on market activity, and while these minimums are competitive, it’s wise to monitor them closely during volatile sessions. Notably, Questrade doesn’t support MetaTrader platforms, meaning you’re dependent on their proprietary tools for trade execution and spread visualization, which can limit deeper customization or automation. Options trading incurs a base fee structure of $0 plus $0.99 per contract. For mutual funds, there is a $9.95 fee per trade, and for certain products like international equities, minimum charges are much higher—$195 plus approximately 1% of the trade value—making them ill-suited for smaller transactions. GICs and bonds require minimum purchases of $5,000, which could be a barrier for some. Precious metals trades are charged at $19.95 USD per trade. Importantly, I’ve had no surprise charges related to deposits, withdrawals, or inactivity. Questrade does not impose non-trading fees in those areas, which adds to the transparency of their cost structure. Still, I recommend reviewing the full fee schedule before trading, especially if your strategy requires frequent trades or exposure to less common products, as some fees can accumulate quickly for more diversified or international portfolios.
